Possible Deficits with HydrocephalusStudents who have hydrocephalus tend to have problems with:
Executive functioning (planning, organizing, ect) Memory loss A loss of what they have previously learned Concentration (http://www.uofmhealth.org) Because these problems may occur in the classroom and at home, strategies can be put in place to prevent or improve the child's deficits. It is important to try to help children as much as possible so they do not fall behind. It is especially important if the child is in a regular education classroom. Teachers and parents can both help the child at school and at home so this does not happen.

Children should be encouraged to live a normal life as much as possible. If the child has a shunt, there is an increased risk of infection, so maintaining a healthy lifestyle is advised. Each case is different, and some children are more susceptible to injury, so with those children, caution should be taken. The amount each child is developmentally affected differs for all cases too, so each child should be given the opportunity for specific accommodations needed (http://www.ninds.nih.gov).
